Wigan ticket, travel and pub guide
By vitty, on February 8th, 2011

Wigan Athletic
DW Stadium
Premier League
February 26, kick off 15:00
Tickets
United have got 4,500 tickets in the North Stand. They cost £28 for adults, £20 for over 65s and under 16s.
The application deadline has passed. Ballot results are out now.
Travel
Car – £7
If you are driving to the game and using a satnav or an internet routeplanner like the Greenflag one, use the destination postcode WN5 0UH.
The basic route from Manchester is the M62 to junction 10 and the M6 to Junction 25. Continue along the A49. The stadium is well sign posted from the motorway.
Parking – free
There is an away fans’ car park a two-minute walk from the away end. Only fans with match tickets can use it though. It costs £5 per car.
Access is via Stadium Way (turn right off Scott Lane once you’ve passed the leisure complex and Asda on your right).
There are many free parking spots on side streets close to the town centre. but you’re looking at a 20-minute walk to the stadium.
One of the best places to park is a 10-minute walk away from the ground in Lingfield Crescent (WNA 8QA).
Park and follow Scott Lane over the river and then turn left onto Stadium Way and you’ll soon see the away fans’ car park and the DW Soccerdome bar by the away end.
Train – £3.60
Buy an off-peak day return ticket for £3.60.
You’ll have absolutely no problem getting there or back, as trains between Manchester’s two main stations and Wigan run three times an hour throughout the day.
Manchester Victoria to Wigan Wallgate
From 10:07, direct trains leave at 07, 10, 33 and 46 past the hour and take 40 minutes. Don’t leave after 13:46 else you won’t make kick off.
Manchester Piccadilly to Wigan Wallgate
From 10:12, direct trains leave at 22 minutes past the hour and take 40 minutes. Don’t leave after 13:22 else you won’t make kick off.
It is a 20-minute walk from the train station to the stadium.
To get to the ground from Wallgate, turn right out of the station and keep walking for 10 minutes or so, passing the Seven Stars Hotel.
After that, you’ll pass under a railway bridge and the Robin Park leisure complex will come into view. You will be able to see the stadium from there.
Wigan Wallgate to Manchester Victoria
Direct trains leave at 17:20, 17:32, 17:59, 18:20, 18:32, 18:58, 19:32, 20:27, 21:27, 21:55 and 22:27. The take 40 minutes.

Wigan Wallgate to Manchester Piccadilly
Direct trains leave at 17:54, 18:53, 19:55, 20:55 and 22:55. They take 45 minutes.
Matchday Coach
Champion Sport Tours
is running coaches to this game, with places costing £8 per person. Coaches leave from the Bishop’s Blaize pub in Chester Road at 13:15 and, after the game, drop off in Manchester City Centre and then the Blaize.
To book, call 0161 282 1966 or email debbie@mufctravel.com
The Betty Bus is running to this game with places costing £10 per person. Coaches leave from Chorlton Street Coach Station at 11:30.
To book, email your name, required number of places and a contact phone number to redsaway@hotmail.co.uk

On behalf of United, Thomas Cook Sport is running coaches to this game, with places costing £18 per person. To book call 0844 800 9900 during business hours or go here
Pubs
If you’re driving and parking on the away fans’ car park, the best place to pop in for a pre-match tipple is The JJB Soccerdome bar which is right in between the away-end entrance and thecar park.
It holds about 150 people and you can get served pretty quickly. It’s about £2.60 a pint and they do pretty decent pies for £2.
But if you’re catching the train, you might want a pint in the town centre.
You might want to avoid The Brunels, which is next door to Wigan Wallgate station.
That particular boozer attracts police and the staff don’t like the usual weekend of fun-seeking football fans, for some reason, especially if they sing songs.

You’re much better off walking a few doors down and calling into the The Swan and Railway (pictured above right), where you’ll get a warm welcome and a pint for £2.30.
If you want to be nearer to the ground, call into Wigan Pier where you’ll find The Orwell (pictured right).
If you’ve got time to grab a bite to eat, they do some cracking food. It’s always a good place to call in to on your way home from the match while you’re waiting for the train, even though it’s a 10-minute walk to the station.

Anyones tickets result out yet ? If not when do people think they will be out ??
there out now mate
The Orwell will be the best place to go en route to the game, down by the canal and they should have food on…when the scousers were down they had a pretty decent pie and chips meal on for a few quid.
was the face value £28 on these as it said £40 on the aplication
Its £28
Spoke to the ticket office twice this morning, been told we’ve got far less than the 4,500 mentioned here. One person said 3,500 and another said less than 3,000. I drew their attention to this website:
http://www.celtichorizontours.com/packages/football/premier-league/wigan-athletic-v-manchester-united/1-night.aspx
Selling away end tickets along with travel and at reasonable prices so can’t be touting. Same site had a section of the upper tier when United played at Bolton this season, the upper tier in the away end that we were denied.
Yet again United away fans get screwed over. Sickening.
why don’t the “biggest club in the world” bother to update their website as regards ticket prices for wigan and the date and time of the crawley match instead of keeping everyone guessing!! the operators in the ticket office only have the same info as the website. pathetic!!
If it’s true that they’re only giving us around 3,000 tickets they must be stupid because the Wigan ends won’t sell out.
Blackburn have the right idea they give us 7,000 every season as they know they won’t completely sell out their own ends.
3,462 allocation
1,000 celtic horizon
so you have to be ACS to apply for aways
i bet none of celtic horizon customers are even season ticket holders
were the justice in this
united shitting on the fans again and again
Well get 4,000 atleast, As its said why the fuck arent the biggets club in the world not updating the allocation on there website and other information. Why are wigan taking tickets of anyway theres going to be thousands of empty seats in the home end ?
And who can confirm defintley what allocation weve got.
A post from a lad on http://www.stretfordendflags.com has posted an email from the ticket office which says we have been given 2,750.
That figure seems very low.
Celtic Horizon are obtaining tickets from the home club.
Both Wigan and Bolton are seling exce packages direct, with seats in the Utd end.
Dont expect 7,00o0 at Blackburn this season, after standing in the gangways last season, the FLA are seeking to cut our allocation to 3,500.
Incidentally, its the same branch of the FLA who rule on allocations at Sunderland.
Yes, agree with Tufty. Wigan are giving us the minimum that they are required to give us under Premier League rules (10% of capacity up to a maximum of 3000) and have then decided to put the rest into hospitality. It is obviously a moral outrage but it is fully within the rules (and not much different to Fulham’s neutral end which is not segregated from the away fans) and is not as bad as clubs who don’t even give us the full 10%.
Re Blackburn and reduced allocations, it is generally more the fault of local councils than the FLA itself (who do have a role too) which is why there is such a patchwork quilt of varied and inconsistent decisions made. In most cases though, I don’t agree that they only cut United’s to have more tickets for their own fans, as actually plenty of the clubs still don’t sell out anyway and they would have reserved the decision making by now if that were the motivation. I prefer standing myself but I don’t agree with Reds blocking aisles and gangways which really does affect our allocations and is pointless anyway.
It is frustrating that we keep getting reduced allocations though – Villa, Bolton, Blackpool, Sunderland & now Wigan.
Liverpool, Newcastle & Everton fans always stand at away games but it is very rare that their allocations get reduced.
We are just an easy target I’m afraid.
Does anyone remember FA Cup Semi at Villa Park against Watford 4 or 5 years back when The FA gave Watford 5,000 more tickets than us?
They said it was for “persistent standing” their end was half empty it was embarrassing just shows how stupid it all is.
We have ourselves to blame. If the allocation is cut through standing in gangways why the hell do people do it and then grip about getting tickets.
Robert – whether it is right to cut allocation or not, that is not the central issue here. In my view, there are three issues
1. If the host club or its respective local council or police force wants to cut allocation, the Premier League should make them announce that plan with enough time left for proper consultation with the fans affected.
At the moment, we only find out because individual fans investigate. Earlier this season, we found out about a hearing about Sunderland’s proposal to cut our allocation and were able to challenge it at a council hearing – that’s democracy.
Whereas with Wigan – not only have the club not informed anyone of the reduced allocation, they have also ignored two enquiries from Reds Away on the issue despite United making an allegation that they are affectively breaking the law by dealing with a third party selling tickets in the away end.
2. If allocation is cut, then surely there has to be a rationale set out concerning how the host club thinks the cut would help whatever problem is that they have identified.
For example: At Bolton – United fans standing. Upper tier closed. Celtic Horizons get upper tier on the proviso all people in that area sit. Arguably unfair, but at least there’s a rationale behind it.
Whereas Wigan – United fans standing, Allocation cut. Celtic Horizons get tickets in the same stand and their customers will stand. How exactly does that solve the problem of persistent standing?
And, while we’re on the subject…what would happen if the 1,000 Celtic Horizons custimers misbehaved? Would United have their allocation cut next season at Wigan because the stewards couldn’t differentiate between those people and people who got their tickets through United?
3. People pay circa £1,200 for season tickets and ACS for the privilege of applying for away games. United are doing little to nothing to ensure they are getting value for money.
In summary, we are heavily lacking in transparency in this area and something needs to be done.
Vitty,
1. I agree with you re democracy and transparency but that can only be the case if the allocation involves a capacity under the required amount under PL rules, eg at Sunderland. But with Wigan they are still giving us the amount they have to under PL rules, it is not actually a reduced allocation despite being less than we usually get.
2. Totally agree but again at Wigan I don’t think that counts as they are still giving us the amount the rules require them too – it is more like Fulham where we get the amount we have to, but there is a neutral end in the next block which is unsegregated. Also, the Celtic Horizon tickets are at one side of the stand rather than mixed in with the United fans (again, the same as Fulham’s neutral end) so we will see if the whole stand is stood up or just one half. At Fulham the away end is always stood up and the neutral end is always sat down.
3. I agree but there are bigger issues than this. I’d focus more on the fact we pay higher prices than other away fans due to price banding. Each PL team should have a set price that all 19 visiting teams’ fans pay. The problem has come about as clubs rightly want top charge their own part time fans more if they only want to see United play rather than go every week, but we get ripped off as a result.
Conflicting e-mails from various ticket office staff, the latest reply that was posted on the http://www.stretfordendflags.com forum says we have an allocation of 3,462. (Which Dave quotes above).
Looking into Celtic Horizons trips, its evident that they are not the sole people getting the tickets in the United End at Wigan. Over the last 2 visits, large numbers have been allocated to Execs, who get a meal in the marquee lounge, located under the away end. These execs then get a section of seats in the middle of the Utd end. evident by the numbers in suits last 2 seasons and the women all tarted up.
Seems Wigan sell these packages direct, but probably via the MUFC exec list.
As Oli has eluded to, we actually get an increased allocation for Wigan.
Given some of the trouble in the concourse on the last 2 visits and the gangways being blocked, then its no wonder they look to reduce the allocation.
The issue from Blackburn last season, was that the gangways were completely bloked, why only a few feet away rows of seats remained empty, as people chose to stand in the gangways.
Will be interesting to see what allocation we get, but rumours of only 4,000 in the upper tier this season.
Unlikely I know, but if anyone has a spare for this match, I’d be very grateful and I’ll help to find one in return for either West Ham, Blackburn or Newcastle (which is more likely).
Thanks
Newcastle only got 4,500 at Blacburn, but that was more to do with the fact that right side of the lower Darwen End, so there’s only half of that and the whole of the upper tier available.
I just wonder where we’re going here. In five years, it wouldn’t be out of the question to see a firm like Thomas Cook selling all away end tickets and then policing the away end to ensure individuals sit down.
Oli – I agree there are bigger issues, but, on this issue, the fact remains, it would not have taken much for Wigan to have consulted on the issue regardless of what their obligations are. And on the ticket price issue, while I agree about the price bandings being unfair, I suspect fans of other teams aren’t exactly happy at paying £50 to see their team at Old Trafford.
Whether bandings are right is a debatable subject, whereas whether consultation on ticketing allocation is right is not.
Vitty,
I do agree with you on consulting, I just don’t see why a club would bother if they were still giving us the allocation they are supposed to as with Wigan. It would almost incentivise no one ever giving us more than the bare minimum than they had to, as if they ever wanted to reduce it again there would be a whole hassle to do so.
The ‘Thomas Cook selling away tickets’ issue is not far from the truth. It has been discussed with United in the past but overlooked for various reasons to do with transparency and security from what I gather. There is also little money in it compared to euro away game packages. Chelsea also got fined for selling Wembley packages with hospitality to their fans once, so there may be rules that make it hard too.
On bandings, I have no issue with clubs having them. It makes total sense for clubs to cash in on ‘big games’ but we suffer as a result. Away fans overpay at OT but at least they all pay the same as each other, overall pricing is a totally separate issue. Home fans at clubs like Fulham only have to cough up for the more expensive games a few times a year, but we are always in the highest category and it is essentially an unintentional impact of the rules about not charging away fans more than home fans. We paid around £100 in 19 league games last season more than City fans to sit (stand) in the same seats in the same grounds. I don’t accept that continuing to be the case.
Oli
You make some good points, Oli. I notice United and other clubs get round the rule of charging home and away fans the same by charging non members more money. The idea that, say, a Liverpool fan, would ever be a United member is farcical.
I agree with you about clubs maybe making allocations minimal if it becomes too much of a drag for them…but surely Wigan would lose out if the allocation was 3,000 as opposed to 5,800?
Having said that, there might be some truth in the idea that they are facing legal action from one fan or that police/stewarding costs limit their profit, though we’ll never know as Wigan won’t tell us.
In any case, the idea that standing up was responsible for someone hurting their ankle at a match is ridiculous..if anything it is the potential hazards of seating layout.
Im guessing if we get 3,000 – 3,500 we will have most of the stand but they will segregate the 2 end parts with stewards so it will just be empty seats.
Absolutely stupid in my opinion why not just give us the full end or the majority of it?
I didn’t go to Wigan last season was there trouble at that game with United fans standing or blocking gangways?
The worst I have seen was at Blackburn last season & Birmingham this year, but I think at both games quite a lot got in without tickets and thats what caused the problem.
When Birmingham first came up they only gave us 2,500 tickets at £47 each now they give us 3,750 and only charge £34 so we must be doing something right!
Hi Vitty,
Yes I agree about member and non member prices. United introduced this when our home tickets sold out easily every week, and so essentially the away fans paid £6 more and no one else did. Nowadays it is a bit different as plenty of people in the home end are paying the extra £6 too.
There have been a couple of Utd away games where United fans were charged more for not being home club members and argued that, as all Utd fans there are OT st holders, they should pay the equiv price as a home club member. At Reading once we all got a refund in our accounts and even at West Ham in the cup this season the tickets said one price but we got debited less (so that we paid the same as WH st holders) as a result of complaining. We need to keep nagging on issues like this. From United’s perspective it costs them nothing to be on our side with these issues too.
Oli
I wrote a letter to united in respect of Wigan game and away tickets in general. I basically complained I hadn’t had an away game all season compared to previous years and asked about splits of our allocation to ST/Loyalty pot/Execs/Comps. I also mentioned Celtic Horizon and asked why the hell are they selling tickets in our end.
The main points United came back with were as follows
‘the wigan fixture there is an alocation of approximately 3,500 tickets.’ Fits in with what other people have sdaid above.
‘Allocations for away games are divided as follows, two thirds of the ST allocation is set aside for qualifying ST holders with a 60/40 split, 60% of the allocation being made available for the loyalty pot and 40% for the standard pot. Currently there are approximately 1000 ST Holders within the loyalty pot’
Where has the other 1/3 gone execs/comps!!!
‘We usually receive approximatelty 15,000 applications for each domestic away game’
I summise from this that a standard ST holder has very little chance of being successful in any ballot. What is the point of having a ST you have no chance of an away ticket, you can get home tickets no probs these days so do it game by game me thinks next year.
On Celtic Horizon they came back with this.
‘ We are concerned to read of the third party company, Celtic Horizon, these details have been passed to our colleagues in Ticketing & Membership Services to investigate with immediate effect as this company does not have a link with the club.’
Just thought I would bring this to everyones attention.
Cheers
Tom, the Utd end will be full. As it will be topped up by the seperate Exec packages and the Celtic Horizon packages.
Lot of problems at Wigan last year with standing in the gangways and fighting in the concourse, as a result of people throwing beer about and getting it all over other fans.
Its the standing in the gangways which is the main issue, rather than standing itself. hence why some clubs leave the last few seats empty on a row or close certain sections of seats. Evene Wolves had mesh on some areas of seating in the Utd end.
Tufty, totally agree with all that, but if you are referring to the mesh at the back of the United end at Wolves, it was to make sure people standing did not block the views of the people in the boxes behind, and they do that for all away fans not just us.
Tom, there would not be segregation between United fans who got tickets in the away end via mufc or those who bought throguh Celtic Horizons as they are all Utd fans. Just as at Fulham there are shared concourses and no segregation between the away and neutral ends.
I’ve written a Q&A on the general issue which is currently the top entry on this site.
My understanding is that there will be segregating betwene the main United end and the CH end at Wigan, otherwise Wigan’s point doesn’t stand up.
Vitty, CH have had these tickets for last 2 seasons, so not a new thing.
same with Bolton, they had the upper tier this season and last.
At Wigan, for last 3 seasons at least, special exec packages have been in place, where they have lounges access, yet tickets in utd end.
no segregation has ever been used and I doubt it will be.
They will probably try and keep the gangways clear and leave the ends of the rows unallocated.
On a lighter note, for those going to the game the Orwell (as mentioned above) will have food on and do a decent pie and chips meal for about £3 tops, plus £1.85 a pint of Carlsberg.
So, some better news on top of the ticket furore!
has anyone got spare for this game?
Will under 16’s need id at the turnstiles
If anyone has a Chelsea spare, I can offer a Wigan + cash for it
Last point on this ticket issue, there is definately a section of the away end that Wigan are selling to executive clients. Not just CH that are doing it.
how much was a ticket for wigan in the end
