Police chief praises fans

A Merseyside Police boss has thanked fans for their behaviour at today’s derby game.

Match Commander, Chief Superintendent Jon Ward, said: “I would like to thank the majority of fans for their behaviour and co-operation during today’s Liverpool Vs Manchester United Match at Anfield.

“I would like to thank the majority of fans for their behaviour and co-operation during today’s Liverpool Vs Manchester United Match at Anfield. (Saturday, 28 January)

“We knew this would be a busy operation and most fans can be proud that they acted as ambassadors for their cities and their clubs.

“Despite the large numbers of supporters from both clubs and lively atmosphere only 17 people were ejected from the ground and at this time, two people arrested during the policing operation, all for low level incidents.

“We continue to work with partners and hope fans have a safe journey home.”

They also launched an appeal for information about a man who was caught on camera appearing to make a racist gesture in the direction of Patrice Evra.

some stupid people are spreading rumours that 3 united fans got arrested for spitting in the hillsborough memorial.

  • Oli

Amar, so you don’t think all the people chanting 96 was not enough and the Sun was right you’re murderers would be capable of that?

  • Paul

Oli I never believed rumour from word go re the spitting on memorial as when you think of the direction we come out of anfield, whether to go to coaches or to lime street, its unlikely a United fan has gone in direction of memorial, positive from yesterday were the aisles were kept clear, I didn’t see or hear anything to suggest we should get a reduced allocation next season.

  • kev

anybody have problems getting in the ground ? Id had a few drinks before the game like i do every game but i wouldn’t say i was drunk.

  • Oli

No Kev, was fine. Why, did you not get in?

  • kev

no oli, well not in the away end anyway i was told to go and get a coffee and go back in 10 mins so i couldn’t of been that bad so i did that and went back he said i’d only been 2 mins and said i wouldn’t be going in, i’ve got no proof but im sure he was going to sell my ticket to make himself some money, at this point i give up before he got me arrested and bought a ticket in the home end and got in no problem it just pissed me off because it’s the only game in the last 9 years that i havn’t been in the united end.

  • higgo

Sounds a bit out of order that Kev. We had no problems and we had had a drink and all the other with us had too. From what I saw there’s no case for a reduced allocation next season, but let’s wait and see.

Let’s hope we can get some revenge in 2 weeks.

  • Jay

17 people ejected, 4 of them that I seen got chucked out for smoking sat near me.

  • Amar

Oli knew it wasnt true, Merseyside police have confirmed it wasnt true, hence the comment to begin with. I did see some trouble with a steward who was way out of order after the game when we were waiting to be let out. He was taken away by his superior. From what i saw he tried to take a flag from some fans, the flag only had 19 on it so nothing offensive. Oddly enough stewards didnt mind fans smoking in the ground after the game where i was.

  • Oli

    Thanks Amar.

Incidentally stewards were confiscating Suarez masks from home fans.

  • hesh

kev thats bang out of order.. to be fair they were alright with me.. i ended up getting to liverpool really late and missing the 1st half but they let me in at half time

  • higgo

Amar, I saw that steward. A right fat git. His boss was watching from the tier above and had him taken away. It was bang out of order from him, but to be fair the rest of the stewarding and policing I witnessed was fair.

  • Dan

I think I saw that Higgo, is that when the chant calling for him to ‘Jump’ went up when he was shouting down from the upper tier? Ha, witnessed some very odd behaviour yesterday from fans and stewards, including some bird with a Liverpool scarf taking a not very discrete dump behind some bins in the Goodison car park. Lovely city.

Based on what I saw, no reason why we shouldn’t get a full allocation next season.

  • Sparta

Amar – re smoking at the end………what are the stewards gonna do to you for smoking when your being kept in?? Chuck you out?? yes please.

  • tomo

It’s about time chants like 96 was not enough just stopped, Liverpool fans stopped the Munich chants years ago, realising how wrong such abuse is.

Football fans need to realise that with Hillsborough, it is a case of but for the grace of God…..

Also chants like ‘It’s never your fault, always the victim’ which was sang numerous times on Saturday is just as bad as any chant I’ve ever heard. Mild unoffensive and pretty tame it might appear, but really is vicious, snidey and uncalled for in my opinion.

  • Lookingforeric

Good day out. Did some Liverpool fans get thrown out for booing evra? About 30 of us got marched out the spoons opposite lime street by the police. Bit harsh I thought but we just hit another boozer

  • Nick

I was sat in row 5 and the end 2 seats had to be left free according to the steward, what i did notice tho a lot of young kids kepted coming and standing in these seats, steward would ask to see their ticket, one was meant to be in row 28 and another in row 20, but they were all under 16 tickets

  • Swordsman

I had problems with what must have been the same steward and was told to ‘go and get a strong coffee and come back in 10 mins’. I had been drinking but wasn’t drunk. So I just went and stood away from him for approx 5 mins, had a cigarette and just made sure I avoided him when I went to go back in and got in no probs. The only one of us that didn’t get in was using an OAP ticket and they confiscated it and told him where to go. That’s the risk you run though.

  • Damian

Tomo, I don’t mind the always the victims-song. The way they have tried to make themselves into victims of a conspiracy after one of their players racially abused a fellow proffesional is bang out of order. Booing Evra for being racially abused is even worse. I don’t mind us telling them that.

Obviously strongly against songs about Hillsbrough. Luckily they were few and far between at least where we stood. A few tried it on but people didn’t join in which was good.

A few scousers on our left did their Munich routine but not many. Far more at city.

  • Higgo

Tomo, I don’t know what the problem is with the “always the victims” song. It’s certainly not vicious. I agree with Damian’s opinion of it as the scousers have tried to spin the whole Evra / Suarez thing on it’s head and make out they have been hard done by.

  • Oli

Tomo, I agree with you, though Damian also makes sense re the victims songs, more in regard to heysel and Suarez than anything hillborough related. The sun was right song is disgusting too but was sung en masse by our support. I do find it fairly ironic that we have some serious scum in our support who sing that stuff but are then outraged by Munich songs. There were a few idiots doing Munich stuff in their end but nothing sung by loads, as we did at times. I’d rather have the moral high ground than sink to low levels.

  • Paul

Can someone please explain the chant “the sun was right, you murderers” chant? i was abit baffled when hearing that. The amount of munich chants has definately fallen , think we need to completely cut out 96 not enough etc chants. good day out, unlcuky with the result. cant wait to give saurez some real abuse when he comes to OT. seeing his reactions to the goals did my nut in!!

  • Amar

Lookingforeric, i was in that pub aswell. tbh it was a bit of banter, nothing too malicious tbh. either way i thought the policing was fair so cant complain

  • Yeah your right Amar,at least they let me finish my pint, had some of the liverpool fans started giving us abuse i can’t have seen that going down too well

  • Oli

It has been confirmed to me that United have cut Liverpool’s allocation to 2011 for next week. This was made easier for Unietd to do having waited for the police and council to praise our fans and restore full allocation at Anfield for next season, so hard for them to now re-cut ours. Clever.

  • Higgo

Nice one. About time too after what they continually do at OT. Less of the horrible bleeders to smash the toilets up.

  • Sean Oliver

Fao- Kev. One of our lads had the same problem. He managed to get in. Think we were turnstile P

  • kev

sean i was in that turnstile p aswell what a jobworth he was fucked my day up anyway.
